Franschhoek is a small, beautiful valley town surrounded by mountains, known for its wine estates, restaurants, guest houses and Huguenot heritage. Tourism and hospitality drive much of the local economy, which means the roads and parking areas on farms and in town have to look as good as they perform.
Hospitality and wine estates
Most of our Franschhoek work is for wine estates, guest houses, restaurants and venues:
- Estate access roads leading from the main road to cellars, tasting rooms and accommodation, built through our road construction service.
- Visitor parking areas for tasting rooms, restaurants and wedding venues, with neat edges and line marking.
- Service roads and yards for deliveries and harvest traffic.
- Speed humps where guests walk across roads.
We schedule work outside peak tourist and harvest periods wherever possible, and plan around events and bookings.
Finishes that fit the valley
In Franschhoek, appearance matters. Options we often discuss include:
- Chip seal surfaces on long estate roads, which give a more natural look than plain black asphalt.
- Tar driveways with clay or cobble brick paving borders.
- Paved forecourts at guest houses and homes, combined with tarred approach roads.
Climate and ground
Franschhoek has hot summers and cold, wet winters, with significant rainfall from the surrounding mountains. Soils include weathered granite, sandstone and clay. Good drainage and a solid base are essential, especially on sloping estate roads where water runs quickly in winter.
Homes and estates
- New tar driveways and resurfacing for homes in town and in the residential estates.
- Private tennis courts on larger properties.
- Pothole repairs, crack sealing and slurry seal for estate roads.
Wedding and event venues
Franschhoek’s wedding and event venues need parking that handles large numbers of guests at once, often on grass or gravel that turns to mud in winter. A properly built tarred or chip-sealed parking area, with clearly marked bays and walkways lit for evening events, makes arrivals and departures smoother. We can phase the work between bookings so no event is disrupted.
Heritage and municipal requirements
Parts of Franschhoek are subject to heritage and planning controls. If your property is in a heritage area, we will advise you to check with the municipality before changing surfaces visible from the street.
Planning ahead
Franschhoek is a longer trip from our base, so we plan site surveys and work in advance. Franschhoek is more than 35 km from Blue Downs, so a R350 site visit fee applies, and you will have a written quote within 24 hours of our visit.
