Worcester is the largest town in the Breede River Valley, on the far side of the Huguenot Tunnel from Paarl. It is a regional centre for farming, transport and business, with wine and fruit farms, packhouses, distribution depots and industrial areas, plus established residential suburbs, schools and hospitals.
A different climate
Worcester’s climate is quite different from Cape Town’s. Summers are hot and dry, winters are cold with frost on clear nights, and rainfall is lower than the coast. For asphalt this means:
- Summer heat that softens surfaces and ages the bitumen faster, so surfaces become brittle sooner.
- Big temperature swings between day and night, and between seasons, that open up cracks.
- Frost that can make water trapped in cracks expand.
We choose suitable mixes, build on a strong, well-compacted base and recommend regular crack sealing and slurry seal to keep surfaces protected.
Farms, packhouses and transport yards
Worcester’s economy relies on agriculture and transport. Our work here includes:
- Heavy-duty yards for trucks, trailers and forklifts at packhouses, cellars and depots.
- Farm access roads, including gravel-to-tar upgrades, through our road construction service.
- Parking areas for businesses, with line marking for bays and loading zones.
- Pothole repairs on yards and roads that carry constant heavy traffic.
We plan around harvest and packing seasons to avoid disrupting operations.
Homes and complexes
- New tar driveways and resurfacing.
- Brick paving for patios and entrances.
- Speed humps and maintenance for complexes and estates.
Schools and institutions
Worcester has many schools, churches and public facilities with parking areas, roads and courts. We resurface tennis courts and parking areas, often during school holidays.
Transport depots
Worcester is a key stop for road freight, and transport depots carry constant heavy traffic. Their yards need a thicker base and asphalt layer, plus clear markings for bays and routes. We build to suit the vehicles you operate.
Frost and cold nights
Winter nights in the Breede River Valley can drop below freezing. We avoid laying asphalt or seals in cold, damp conditions and plan major work for the warmer months.
Hospitals and public facilities
Large public facilities in Worcester have busy parking areas that cannot close. We phase work and keep emergency routes open at all times.
Planning work over the mountain
Worcester is further from our base, so we plan Worcester work carefully and group jobs where possible to keep costs down. A R350 site visit fee applies outside our 35 km radius, and you will have a written quote within 24 hours of our visit.
