George is the largest town on the Garden Route, set on a plateau below the Outeniqua mountains. It is the commercial and transport hub of the region, with an airport, a busy business and retail sector, golf estates and growing residential suburbs.
Rainfall all year round
Unlike Cape Town, which gets most of its rain in winter, the Garden Route gets rain throughout the year, and George sits below mountains that catch moisture coming off the sea. Surfaces here rarely get a long dry season to recover. That makes three things critical:
- Drainage. Water must leave the surface fast, through proper falls, channels and outlets.
- A protected base. A good prime coat, sealed edges and early crack sealing keep water out of the layer works.
- Timing. We plan asphalt and seal work around dry spells, and we will not lay in conditions that compromise the job.
Ground conditions
George’s soils include clays and weathered material that hold water and lose strength when wet. A deeper, well-compacted base and good subsoil drainage are often needed. We assess the ground on every site.
Projects we take on in George
Because George is a long way from our Western Cape base, we focus on projects where the scale makes the travel worthwhile, or where we can group several jobs together:
- Estate and complex roads, including resurfacing, slurry seal and pothole repairs.
- Commercial parking areas for retail, offices and industrial sites, with line marking.
- Road construction for private roads and developments.
- Residential tar driveways, especially where neighbours or a complex can group work together.
Golf and security estates
George has several well-known golf and security estates. These have internal roads, parking and walkways that need planned maintenance, along with speed humps and re-marking. We can survey an estate’s road network and give a phased maintenance plan.
Estates with their own road rules
Many George golf and security estates have rules about contractor hours, vehicle sizes and how work is phased on their roads. We obtain the estate’s contractor requirements before quoting, so the price reflects the real conditions on site.
Commercial sites near the airport and N2
Business and light industrial sites around George’s airport and along the N2 often need large parking areas and delivery yards. These are the kind of projects where a dedicated trip from our base makes sense, and we can programme the work over several days to suit your operations.
