Hermanus is the main town of the Overberg coast, famous for its cliff path and the southern right whales that come into Walker Bay. It has a large retired community, many holiday homes and a growing number of permanent families, with security estates, golf estates and neighbouring villages such as Onrus, Vermont and Sandbaai along the coast.
Coastal conditions
Hermanus sits right on the Atlantic coast and its surfaces face:
- Strong winds, including the south-easter in summer and winter storms, carrying sand and salt spray.
- Salt air, which corrodes steel gate tracks, drain grates and fittings.
- Varied ground, from coastal sand near the beaches and vleis to rockier ground on the slopes of the Kleinrivier mountains.
We build every driveway on a solid, compacted base with firm edges, use coastal-grade drainage fittings and keep drainage details simple so wind-blown sand is easy to clear.
Estates and retirement villages
Hermanus and the surrounding villages have many estates and retirement villages with internal roads, gatehouses and shared parking. Safe, even surfaces are especially important for older residents. We help estate managers and trustees with:
- Pothole repairs and crack sealing.
- Slurry seal and resurfacing of ageing roads.
- Speed humps and line marking.
Homes and holiday homes
- New tar driveways for new builds and replacements.
- Brick paving for forecourts, pool decks and outdoor living areas. Natural-toned pavers suit the coastal setting.
- Extra parking for boats, caravans and visitors.
Many holiday-home owners prefer work done while they are away. We can arrange access with you or your caretaker and send progress photos.
Businesses and hospitality
Guest houses, restaurants, shops and wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley need durable, well-marked parking areas and access roads. We plan work around the busy whale and holiday seasons.
Retirement and holiday homes
Many Hermanus homes are owned by people who live elsewhere for part of the year. We can arrange the site survey with you on video or with your caretaker, send the quote by email or WhatsApp, and share photos at each stage of the work.
Fynbos and coastal reserves
Some properties border nature reserves or protected fynbos. We keep machinery and material within the agreed work area and take care not to disturb surrounding vegetation.
Planning trips to the Overberg
Hermanus is further from our base, so we plan work in advance and group jobs in the area to keep travel costs fair. A R350 site visit fee applies outside our 35 km radius, and you will have a written quote within 24 hours of our visit.
