Low-lying, sandy ground
Much of Muizenberg, especially near the beach, Zandvlei and Marina da Gama, is flat, sandy and low-lying, with a high water table in winter. On ground like this:
- The base needs to be strong and well compacted, because sand alone cannot carry cars.
- Edges must be restrained or the surface will spread and crumble.
- Getting rid of water is difficult when there is little natural fall, so levels and drains need careful planning.
On some sites, we raise the driveway slightly and build drains or soakaways to keep water away from the base.
Older buildings, tight access
The older parts of Muizenberg, around the main road and the beachfront, have historic buildings, semi-detached homes and narrow plots. Access can be tight. We use compact equipment and hand-lay asphalt or pavers where needed, without compromising on compaction.
Lakeside, at the foot of the Boyes Drive slopes, has steeper sites where runoff from the mountain needs to be managed.
