Stellenbosch is the heart of the Cape Winelands: a university town with historic oak-lined streets, surrounded by wine estates, guest farms, security estates and growing residential and business areas. Our work here is a mix of residential driveways, estate roads and, especially, the access roads and parking areas that wine farms and hospitality businesses depend on.
Winelands soils
Much of the Stellenbosch area has soils formed from weathered granite and shale, often with a clay component. Decomposed granite can make a good base material when properly compacted, but clay-rich layers can swell when wet and shrink in summer. Slopes on the farms below the Simonsberg, Helderberg and Jonkershoek mountains add runoff to the mix.
We check the ground on every survey and design the base, edges and drainage to suit.
Wine farm and estate roads
Wine farms need roads that can carry harvest trucks, tractors, delivery vehicles and tour buses, while looking good for visitors. Through our road construction service we:
- Build and upgrade access roads from the public road to cellars, tasting rooms and packsheds.
- Convert gravel roads to tar or chip seal.
- Build parking areas for tasting rooms, restaurants and wedding venues, with line marking and signage.
- Add speed humps where visitors and farm traffic mix.
We plan work around harvest season, when farms are at their busiest and heavy vehicles are constantly moving.
Residential Stellenbosch
- Historic town homes, where finishes such as clay brick paving or cobbles often suit better than plain asphalt.
- Family homes in suburbs such as Die Boord, Uniepark, Paradyskloof and Brandwacht, with tar driveways and resurfacing.
- Security and golf estates with internal roads and estate guidelines.
- Student accommodation needing hard-wearing parking for several cars.
Estate maintenance
Estates around Stellenbosch call on us for pothole repairs, crack sealing, slurry seal and re-marking, planned in phases to suit their budgets.
Student and rental properties
Landlords with student digs in Stellenbosch often need extra off-street parking for several tenants’ cars. We can convert part of a garden into a durable, well-drained parking area, keeping the look of the property in mind.
University-town traffic
Term time brings heavy traffic and limited parking near the university. We plan deliveries carefully and prefer holidays for work close to campus.
