Line marking

Road and parking line marking

Clear, durable markings for parking bays, arrows, stop lines, crossings and loading zones, set out neatly and to practical sizes.

Good line marking does a lot of work. It shows drivers where to park, which way to go and where to stop. It protects pedestrians, keeps fire lanes clear and makes a parking area hold more cars. Faded or badly set out lines do the opposite: people park across two bays, drive the wrong way and block access. We set out and paint markings for parking areas, estates, schools, warehouses and private roads.

What we mark

  • Parking bays, including standard, small-car, motorcycle, visitor and reserved bays.
  • Disabled bays with symbols, hatched access aisles and kerb ramp locations.
  • Directional arrows and one-way systems.
  • Stop lines, yield lines and pedestrian crossings.
  • Fire lanes, no-parking zones and yellow lines.
  • Loading zones and hatched areas.
  • Speed hump markings for visibility.
  • Numbering and lettering, such as unit numbers on bays or “VISITORS” and “STAFF”.
  • Warehouse floors and yards, including walkways and forklift routes.

Setting out comes first

Before any paint goes down, we plan and set out the layout. On a new surface, we design the bay layout to fit the most cars that can manoeuvre comfortably. On an existing site, we can re-mark the original layout or suggest improvements. Lines are chalked or snapped out first so you can see the layout before it becomes permanent.

Paint and materials

  • Road marking paint is the standard choice for most parking areas and private roads, applied by line-marking machine for straight, consistent lines.
  • Retroreflective glass beads can be dropped onto wet paint so markings show up in headlights at night. This is recommended for estate roads and entrances.
  • Stencils are used for arrows, symbols, numbers and lettering so every one is the same.

We choose the colour and type of marking to suit the surface and use.

New surfaces and re-marking

On a new asphalt surface, markings are applied once it has cured enough. If you need to open sooner, we can apply a first coat and return for a second.

For re-marking, we clean the surface, remove loose paint where needed and repaint over the existing lines. If the layout is changing, old lines can be blacked out so they do not confuse drivers.

Combine with surfacing work

Line marking is the finishing step on most of our parking area, road construction and slurry seal jobs, so it can be included in one quote and one programme. If you only need lines repainted, we do that as a standalone job too.

Working around your site

Marking is quick, but bays cannot be used while the paint dries. We phase work across a parking area, use cones and tape to keep traffic off wet lines, and can work early in the morning, on weekends or after hours.

Planning a parking layout

When a site is being re-marked, it is worth asking whether the old layout still works. Common improvements we suggest include:

  • Angled bays on one-way aisles, which are easier to drive into and can suit narrower sites.
  • A clear one-way loop so cars are not reversing into oncoming traffic.
  • Pedestrian walkways marked from the parking area to entrances, so people are not walking down driving aisles.
  • Dedicated delivery and refuse zones that keep trucks out of customer bays.
  • Visitor bays near the entrance for complexes, with residents’ bays numbered by unit.

We sketch the proposed layout on a plan or directly on site with chalk before painting, so you and your tenants or trustees can agree on it first.

Keeping markings visible for longer

Markings wear fastest where tyres turn and brake. Keeping the surface clean of sand and grit, sealing cracks before they spread under lines, and re-marking high-wear areas such as entrances and stop lines a little more often keep the whole layout readable.

Line marking: common questions

How long does road marking paint last?

It depends on traffic and sun exposure. Markings in high-traffic driving lanes wear fastest, while bay lines in quiet areas last much longer. Most sites need re-marking every few years.

Can you mark a new surface straight away?

New asphalt needs time to cure before it is painted, otherwise the paint can discolour or lift. We schedule line marking for after the surface has settled, and can do temporary markings if the site must open sooner.

Do you mark disabled parking bays?

Yes, including the symbol, cross-hatching and access aisles, sized for practical use.
