Knysna is built around its famous lagoon, between the Heads, the indigenous forests and the hills above town. It is a popular place to live and holiday, with homes on steep hillsides, waterfront and island developments, golf and forest estates, and a lively town centre.
Hills, forest and rain
Knysna’s setting brings three big challenges for driveways and roads:
- Steep sites. Many homes are on hillsides with steep, winding driveways. Grip, transitions and stability on the slope all need careful design.
- High rainfall all year. The Garden Route gets rain in every season, and surfaces rarely dry out fully. Drainage must be excellent, and the base must be protected from water.
- Forest and shade. Properties near the forest are shaded and damp, with leaf litter, moss and tree roots to manage.
We design every Knysna job around getting water off the surface and away from the base: positive falls, side channels, cut-off drains and well-sealed edges.
Fire recovery and rebuilding
Parts of Knysna have been rebuilt following the 2017 fires, and new homes and estates continue to be developed. On new builds, the driveway is often the last thing done. We are happy to work with builders and architects to plan it early, so levels and drainage are right from the start.
What we take on in Knysna
Because Knysna is far from our base, we focus on:
- Estate roads and complexes, with resurfacing, slurry seal, pothole repairs and crack sealing.
- Road construction for private roads and developments.
- Commercial parking areas with line marking.
- Residential tar driveways and brick paving, especially where several jobs can be grouped.
Built for the wettest months
In Knysna it rains in every season, so we build drainage in from the start: side channels, cut-off drains on steep driveways and outlets that discharge safely away from the slope. Edges are sealed so water cannot get under the asphalt.
Island and waterfront properties
Homes on Thesen Islands, Leisure Isle and near the lagoon sit on low ground close to the water table. Surfaces there need a well-drained base and enough fall to shed water quickly. We take this into account on every waterfront quote.
Forest estates
Estates near the forests have shaded, damp roads where moss and leaf litter build up. Good drainage and regular cleaning are part of keeping them safe.
