Kommetjie is a small coastal village on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, below Slangkop lighthouse and close to the long beaches running towards Noordhoek. Its homes range from older beach cottages and family houses to newer homes in estates on the edge of the village. It is quiet, close-knit and exposed to everything the Atlantic weather brings.
Atlantic conditions
Kommetjie is one of the most exposed places we work:
- Wind is strong and frequent, blowing fine sand across driveways and into drains.
- Salt spray from the Atlantic corrodes steel fittings, drain grates and gate tracks.
- Sandy ground provides little support until it is compacted and confined.
- Winter fronts bring heavy rain driven by north-westerly wind.
We build driveways here with a solid, compacted base and strong edges, specify coastal-grade drainage fittings, and keep details simple so wind-blown sand is easy to clear.
Typical properties
- Beach cottages and older homes in the original village, often on small erven with tight access.
- Family homes in the newer parts of Kommetjie and in Imhoff’s Gift.
- Estates with internal roads and shared parking.
- Holiday homes and guest houses needing tidy guest parking.
Popular jobs in Kommetjie
- New tar driveways replacing sand, gravel or broken concrete.
- Brick paving for forecourts, outdoor living areas and walkways. Lighter pavers stay cooler and suit the coastal setting.
- Driveway resurfacing on older asphalt.
- Pothole repairs and crack sealing for estates and complexes.
Keeping the village character
Kommetjie has a relaxed, natural feel. Many residents prefer finishes that blend with the surroundings, such as earthy paving, a tar strip with a paved or gravel edge, or a chip seal on longer access roads. We are happy to suggest options that look at home in the village.
Sandy plots and soakaways
Many Kommetjie properties have no stormwater connection, so water from driveways must soak away on site. Fortunately the sandy ground absorbs water well. We size soakaways for the area they serve and place them away from buildings and septic systems.
Imhoff’s Gift and newer homes
Newer homes on the edge of Kommetjie often still have temporary driveways left by the builder. Replacing these with a properly built surface is one of the most common jobs we do in the area.
Planning South Peninsula work
Kommetjie is one of our longer trips, so we plan and group work in the far south in advance. Because Kommetjie is more than 35 km from our base, a R350 site visit fee applies, and you will receive a written quote within 24 hours.
