Paarl stretches along the Berg River valley below the granite domes of Paarl Mountain, with one of the longest main streets in the country running through the historic town. Around it are wine and fruit farms, packhouses, industrial areas and growing residential suburbs, along with schools and sports facilities that serve the wider region.
Hot summers, wet winters
Paarl has hotter summers than Cape Town and cold, wet winters. That means bigger temperature swings, which are hard on asphalt:
- Summer heat softens asphalt and ages bitumen faster, so surfaces dry out and become brittle sooner.
- Winter rain finds its way into any cracks and softens the base.
We use suitable asphalt mixes, build on a well-compacted base and recommend regular maintenance such as crack sealing and slurry seal to keep surfaces protected.
Granite soils and slopes
Paarl’s soils are largely formed from weathered granite, with clay layers in places. Homes on the slopes of Paarl Mountain have steeper driveways and faster runoff, while the valley floor is flatter. We check both ground and drainage on every survey.
Farms, packhouses and yards
The Paarl area has many wine and fruit farms, cellars and packhouses that rely on durable roads and yards. Through our road construction and parking area services, we build:
- Heavy-duty yards and loading areas for trucks and forklifts.
- Farm access roads, including gravel-to-tar upgrades.
- Visitor parking for tasting rooms and venues, with line marking.
We plan work around harvest and packing seasons.
Homes and complexes
- New tar driveways and resurfacing for family homes.
- Brick paving for patios, pool surrounds and borders.
- Pothole repairs and speed humps for complexes and estates.
Schools and sports clubs
Paarl’s schools and clubs have parking areas, roads and courts that need regular attention. We resurface tennis courts, parking areas and access roads, often during school holidays.
Harvest timing
During the grape and fruit harvest, farm roads and yards are at their busiest and cannot be closed. We prefer to schedule farm road work before or after harvest and to plan the job so that vehicles can still pass while we work.
Historic Main Road properties
Paarl’s long Main Road has many historic buildings. Where a property has heritage value, finishes such as clay pavers or cobbles may suit better than plain asphalt, and we advise checking with the municipality before changing anything visible from the street.
