We build both tar and brick paving driveways, so we have no reason to push you one way or the other. Both work well when the base is done properly. Here is how they compare.
Cost
On medium and large driveways, tar is usually cheaper per square metre than paving. Asphalt is laid and rolled quickly, while paving involves laying, cutting and jointing thousands of individual units. On very small areas, the difference narrows because tar jobs have fixed costs such as transport and a minimum asphalt load. Our pricing guide explains the factors behind both.
Appearance
Paving offers more choice: colours, shapes, patterns and textures, including clay pavers that suit older homes. Tar gives a clean, uniform black surface that suits modern and practical properties. Many of our customers combine the two, with a tar driveway and a paved border or garage apron.
Joints and weeds
A tar surface has no joints, so there is nowhere for weeds or ants to get in. Paving joints need occasional re-sanding and weed control.
Repairs and access to services
If you need to dig up a pipe or cable under paving, the pavers can be lifted and relaid with little visible trace. On tar, a cut-out patch will usually show, although a neat saw-cut repair is long-lasting.
Steep driveways
Both work on slopes, but each needs care. Asphalt gives good grip and a continuous surface that water runs off. Paving on a steep slope needs strong edge restraint and a herringbone pattern so the units do not creep downhill.
Drainage
Asphalt sheds water, so it must be laid to good falls with somewhere for the water to go. Paving lets a little water through the joints, which means the base must drain well, but some runoff still flows across the surface.
Heat
Black asphalt gets hot in summer. Lighter-coloured pavers stay cooler underfoot, which matters around pools and patios.
Our honest recommendation
- Long or wide driveways on a budget: tar.
- Character homes, courtyards, patios and pool areas: paving.
- A bit of both: a tar driveway with a paved border or apron gives a finished look at a sensible price.
